James T: wow i didnt know that they had tshirts back then
mazerrackham001: Well they certainly didn't have electric light bulbs, but Improvised Explosive Devices, (IEDs, referred to at the time at torpedoes) were used to sink dozens of Federal warships, including at least seven Federal ironclads. Many of those torpedoes were detonated with electric batteries.
mazerrackham001: It always amazes me that even history books often only ever mention 3 or 4 Federal ships and the Virginia. In reality, there were 6 Confederate ships. 3 were lightly damaged, including the Virginia. There were around 20 Federal ships.
The Cumberland, Congress, Pendulum, and Whitehall were sunk or would sink from damage (Whitehall) after the battle.
The Zouave, Dragon, Cambridge, St. Lawrence, Minnesota, and Monitor were damaged. Zouave and Dragon were totally disabled.
