strato man: You will collect virtually the same amount of solar energy by simply letting the sun shine through the window. The solar radiation will heat up whatever it hits inside the house, which will then heat the air in the house. In fact you may find that the simple window actually provides more heat because the air near the window will not be as warm as with the "solar collector" so not as much heat will be lost to conduction, convection and radiation through the window. On the other hand, putting calm insulation over your windows at night, or on windows not facing the sun, will keep heat loss down significantly.

Carol Knudsen: How much space is between window glass and foil surface?

wildfireatm3: Hey Troy, This is still a good video. Thus dates me to being a viewer of yours.lol
Best of luck to you as you persevere in your endeavors. Time to get that water project complete. Roof, Gutter, Tanks, Running water in The Tiny House On Wheels. Tank-less 12v Hot water unit and your set up for good. You can do it yourself.

Trickster Sabo: Need dampers on it for at night so the hot air does get cool at night.  awesome build lot easier than the wood ones I've seen!

Md Mamun Sarif: Heya! Have you tried - Maxim Earth 4 Energy (google it)? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my brother got big returns with it.

Johnny Pea: would a dark curtain do the same thing?

Trina Jennings: My sister has made a few solar windows and even one for a chicken shed. She uses pepsi cans and paints them black and also using the glass or frame from old storm windows/doors and then adds a little fan.The chicken house got so warm they had to open a window for them:)

The Do It Yourself World: That window gets blocked off, yes, but I have a bunch of windows in this camper so its no problem.

tappps: isn't it dark?

The Do It Yourself World: :)

2JobsStillPoorUSA: Will do... I just need to find an industrial strength mechanical type thermostat and get my hubby involved because he can deal with any sensors and actuators that I would have no clue about. :)

The Do It Yourself World: Please come over the thediyworld forum and post your work when its done. I am interested to see how it works out.

2JobsStillPoorUSA: I have some ideas for a more sturdy heater with some sort of closure on those vents. I've been think of something like one of those springs found in the old style thermostats. If I can get it to work as I imagine, it will automatically open and close the vents with just the change in heat.

The Do It Yourself World: Yes, good point. Taping some foil that can blow inwards at the top, but seals against the hole at night works. You can tape foil on the bottom in reverse as well.

2JobsStillPoorUSA: I did something very similar inside my home... amazing how great minds think alike. I do have to say that the siphon effect happens on cold winter night in reverse... taking heat from the top vent and cooling it against the glass and expelling it from the bottom vent. I found that blocking the vents with the excess foam you cut stops that problem. :)

The Do It Yourself World: @rigidheddleweaving I am working on a water system, but we are in full winter here and I need to use antifreeze with it. Hopefully I will have a working system soon.

rigidheddleweaving: Have you tried storing the heat in water bottles? That's my next fun thing to try. I'm going to run tubing thru one of these into a water jug and see what kind of thermosophoning action I get.
