Sony NEX-VG30

What do you think about this video?

Electronic Methods Tech: It's a decent camera, but compared to the NS700 it is A LOT darker. I have to increase the gain to twice as high in order to let in the same amount of light. Which kind of defeats it's low light performance selling point...

B and H: The Redrock Micro microShoulderMount Deluxe Bundle is a good choice that features standard 15mm rods for universal compatability (B&H # RE80030023). You can pair it with the Tilta 4 x 4" Lightweight Matte Box from ikan which easily mounts onto 15mm rods via its rod adapter - (B&H # IKMBT05). Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.

TONYLOUIS100: 1st comment I looked at this camera in london but prefer the FS100 and 700 I can't get on with touch screen and love the features on the FS100, 700

LimitsEdits: PLEASE HELP ME! I want to invest in a good camera for making short movies, documentaries etc.. but im not sure what to get, i was looking at dslrs such as the 7d or any other ones, but i could also get a pro camcorder such as the sony nex vg30 which i saw in Best buy. Can somebody help me decide what to get for a filmmaker? I really cant choose, some saw dslrs have a more movie like video because of the sensor but idk. Please help!

Ryan Hicks QB1: I noticed that in using the VG-30 the rocker zoom does not extend to the full edges of the manual zoom control. It seems that it only covers about 50% of the Zoom in and out. Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting I need to change? I wanted to use this on a remote camera setup where I would not be able to access the zoom switch on the side of the lens. Any ideas? Oops - Never mind - You answered this question in the video. I had it set to Digital Zoom.

Pedro Ramos: What about a compatible rig, for a matte box, etc? Any recommendations? And what about a tripods?

B and H: Please copy and past this B&H model number into the search box on our website for the current price: SONEXVG30 or with lens: SONEXVG30H. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

New Perspective Pictures: Hi! I bought the Sony NEX VG30H. I personally think that this is a great option. You get what you pay for and it has a pretty good sensor size for this price. I've used this a lot and this camera has a lot of nice features! I recommend it!

Cesar Serrano: Will an XLR mic pick up sound from the lens when the adapter is attached?

B and H: The most significant difference is the fixed lens of the Panasonic AG-AC90 vs. the SONY NEX VG-30 's flexibility of offering interchangeable, removeable lenses. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

juliancraane: Another one?!

Totem Pic: Is the only differences between this one and VG900 sensor?

B and H: The camera does not have anything built in for web streaming. What you would need to do is use the HDMI output into a capture box on a computer for streaming. The FX1000 you would use the cameras firewire output to a firewire port on the computer for streaming. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com

Rafi Di: are you guys going to do one on the VG 900?

B and H: They are very different cameras. The VG30 is a cine style camera, single large sensor and cine style lens options. The XF100 is a fixed servo zoom lens camera that shoots in 50mbps 4:2:2. So comparing the cameras will depend more on what you will be using the camera for and which features are more important. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com

cyndylouproductions: How do you think this camera compares to the Canon XF100? Thank you! :)

alphaphotoandvideo: can you compare it to panasonic ag-ac 90?

B and H: The NEX-VG900 boasts a 24.3MP FullFrame 35mm EXMOR CMOS sensor and compatability with both SONY "E" and "A" series lenses. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: AskBH@BandH.com

Mekkaman: Will the Sony XLR adapter and microphone that came on the Sony HVR-A1U work with this NEX-VG30? The configuration looks the same but I can't tell from this video if the connectors are the same.

B and H: The NEXVG30 offers a 3.5mm (1/8") stereo mini external mic input port. The Sony HVR-A1U has a similar input as well. But the XLR adapter will not connect to the NEXVG30. It was built expressly for the HVR A1U. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

felipipi: price ?

justforblah: Hi, thanks for the review. I think because the camera is so new, I haven't been able to track down information about this camera's live web streaming capabilities, so I hope you may have some insight. Basically, can the NEX-VG30H live stream video on the web? Can I buy some apparatus that may make it possible to live stream on the web with this camera? If so, what kind of converter box? Or, am I better off purchasing the Sony HDR-FX1000? Thank you.

brianminkc: this is good.... I get tired of watching digital rev. They are punks.

B and H: Welcome and thank you for watching.

B and H: I would also consider the extremely compact SONY HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD (B&H # SOHXRNX30U). It has one of the very best Balanced Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization Systems I have used. It is perfect for the "run & gun" shooter. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.

mattiemaas: i love b&h! but I live in europe... when is it coming to europe? :p

cyndylouproductions: Thank you so much! I will be doing a lot of run and gun shooting! Plus, I want something that has a great picture but isn't a huge bulky camera. I will be filming a lot overseas and don't always want to be the attraction! :) Which camera would you choice?

B and H: Yes - this camera will accept fisheye lenses like the Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver) (B&H# SO1628). Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

B and H: Yes - this camera and lens combination offers manual focus and zoom along with the automatic functions. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.

danny11darko: Is this camcorder compatible with imovie?

Pedro Ramos: Does this lenses allow manual focus and zoom?

B and H: Yes - this camera may be shipped to Saudi Arabia. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

guitarheadization: Hey B&H guys! I will be purchasing the body only version of this camcorder from your website shortly. Any recommendation for a good lens? as long as i can manually adjust focus and zoom (: thanks!

BboyWildWind: That is great information .

Freak On A Leash: How would you compare this camera to the Sony EA50UH? I'm trying to decide between the two. It seems like the functionality (XLR, buttons, etc) of the EA50UH is worth another few hundred. Besides the price, are there any other pros to buying the VG30 over an EA50U?

B and H: The EA50 is obviously the better of the two cameras with the added XLR, shoulder mount design and other pro features. It is worth the money over the VG30. The only possible pro for the VG30 over the EA50 I would think (depending on usage) is that it is in a smaller form factor, other than that I would recommend the EA50. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com

Anvanho: Terrific product video! thanks for posting; It helped introduce me further to this model. I'm snooping around for a new 'corder ... seems for years now, every unit I buy more or less "expires" after 5 or so years ... might be the demanding conditions I haul them out into regularly (mountaineering; backpacking; etc.).

gearheadflicks: Just bought the VG30... IT DOES NOT SUPPORT VIDEO DATA info (battery info and Record on etc, ) to an external monitor via HDMI. I'm on the phone right now with Sony trying to downgrade our VG30 to a VG20. (Sony confirms this fail) We use jibs and glide rigs... so not knowing if you're recording or the battery is about to die is very important. Seems like a firmware update could fix this?

Jamie Dawson: 2:40 Good God.... They still haven't fixed that? Look, I'm not asking for much here. I just think after the 3rd(?) version of this camera, they would fix that. Honestly, that problem is a HUGE reason why I want to avoid this camera and it's predecessors.

80X86: You forgot to tell them what are your requirements, what are you going to shoot mostly. It's like "what car would you recommend for me?". Are you going to race, to deliver cargo, to repair appliances, to tow?

Jonathan Navarro: Can you put a fisheye lens on it?

B and H: For the VG-30, two affordable external recorders are the Atomos Ninja 2 Video Recorder and the NEXTO DI - ND2730G Nexto Photo Storage Portable Backup Drive (500GB HDD) . Dennis L askbh{at}bandh{dot}com

nil1230: theres no slow mo in this one r u serious sony!?

John Eric Eudin: just a question...do u ship in the middle east? saudi arabia...? thank you..

Eric Kerkhoff: Thanks for this review! Can an external hard drive be connected to the VG30 to write video/stills directly to the external disk? if so, what hard drive do you recommend?

B and H: We ship to over 200 countries!

B and H: The Panasonic is terrific camera at unbeatable low price right now (See B&H # PAHCX900MK). The SONY offers an amazing built-in projector, wider angle lens, 96GB (3X the memory than Panasonic) of embedded memory and better battery life. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. MarkS

Yuriy K: For everyday use you would still want 18-200 instead of 18-55 (unless you're on a tight budget) which comes in a VG30H kit, because of better zoom level, plus you might want something for low light, like 35mm F/1.8 prime lens. If you're not going to buy more than one lens, then what's the point to have this camcorder - you could get an PJ790 and be happy with it. Also, for better image quality look for lenses with white on blue logo, but they are expensive.

B and H: Yes, the LCD screen will flip over to view from the front. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com

B and H: All formats of the VG30 are compatible with IMovie with the exception of the 60p footage option. Dana G. askbh{at}bandh{dot}com
