Scotty Kilmer: How To Tell If Your Head Gasket Is Blown
asustech007: Hey Scotty got those head gaskets replaced on that Grand Prix, had to take
the heads in though, one of them was warped a little so they both got
resurfaced and checked for cracks. It's been nearly a week now and the
owner says the car has no problems. So it appears that perhaps one of those
heads were actually causing the problem.... where I thought it might have
been the head gasket? Either way, sometimes it's hard to tell with the
problem this thing had, it was only getting very little air past that
gasket, but it doesn't take much anyway to pump a cooling system up with
air. Thanks for your help!
adem nacakli: very nice thanks
than217: They told me either my head gasket was blown or that my water pump was
leaking. Would this test in the video above get a false positive for a
'blown head gasket' if the water pump was broken?
john imburgia: Scotty,
Will that work on a Cummins diesel?
asustech007: Scotty, is the replacement head bolts for a 06 Pontiac grand prix 3.8 liter
engine, "torque to yield" bolts? It has cast iron heads, and from what I've
understood the TTY bolts stretch when they get torqued down. Would I be
screwing up if these bolts are used on this engine? According to parts
store they only list one kind of head bolt for this engine but never asked
if it had cast iron heads on it or not. The torque specs seem odd, it looks
like the specs are for aluminum heads. I can't seem to get a definitive
answer from those I've called about it, so I don't know what the deal
than217: I was having a hard time trying to get air to suck up into the tube. But
the big fans on the radiator? weren't spinning. What would that mean.
Holly Weimer: I have a 96 Celica (automatic) that accelerates very slowly. I know these
cars have a reputation for being slow, but I get passed up like I'm a snail
on the freeway. It also runs rough and loudly, and shakes a lot at a stop.
A lot of white smoke comes out of the tailpipe when I start it, but goes
away when driving. Does that sound like a head gasket issue? It has never
mario villa: He's goofy lol
AthenaSparrow: You're so wonderful! Thank you for making this channel! I think you just
rescued a damsel in distress!
asustech007: 3.8 liter engine in a 2006 Grand Prix, engine with 180,000 + miles was
overheated once from a water pump locking up. The guy who had it changed
the pump and belt but the car looses coolant slowly with no signs of leaks
in the oil or on the ground, or from the heater core. Constant bubbles come
up through the coolant reservoir after engine gets good and hot, a few
bubbles when the engine is fairly cool, and no bubbles when the engine is
cold. Wouldn't you say he had a bad head gasket... like a very slight crack
that gets worse the hotter the engine gets?
ipdjbt: Can this test be performed using the coolant expansion tank instead of the
hector olivare: Scotty my 92 accord is blowing a cloud of white smoke I mean a big cloud,
it makes a little squeaky noise by the distributor. is that what a blown
head gasket sound?
GUS FUNK: Wtf happened at 2:13 lol
Paul Dimofte: FIRST PRES ILIKE AND AFTER WATCH THE VIDEO BEACUSE IM SURE IS GREAT !
John Robinson: Hey scotty, my transmission slips occasionally and my mechanic said I had a
blown head gasket so I paid 800 dollars to have it fixed. Does this sound
like a good estimate to you?
Chris laberty: Where could I grab one of these kits at?
domenic brady: Hi there again Scottie. A quick follow up on the 2002 Honda Civic Ex.
Should my mechanic have changed the spark plugs as well? It has over 191K
and the last time they were changed was at 120K. Thanks...
KavaniLoyan: My car is showing signs of a blown head gasket (using a lot of coolant,
white smoke out tail pipes that smells like coolant) so I did this test and
it didn't yield any results (test liquid didn't change color at all).
T1mbo: How can you tell whether it's a cracked head/block or a blown head gasket?
Mladen Milić: After replacing head gasket , engine did nost sound right , and rubber
exaust mounts caught on fire . Also , I noticed that spark plugs are sooty
. I think that fuel injector (car is 1.6 Opel Vectra A , it hah something
carb looking with one injector) is puting too much fuel , and mechanic says
that I need new cylinder head .
alex prinzo: I love how happy you sounded when the car revealed it was blown haha! Love
your vids man, very helpful!
squibblesthehusky: as of today my new head gasket went out, is it possibly warped head?
serius tn: Thank u scotty kilmer I have a wolksvagen touereg 6cylinders gasoline 2004
gasket blown the water of radiator evaporated with the exaust smoke...
Joe Shook: Thank you Scotty very very much, i'm amazed cause based on watching your
videos, I thought that was perhaps going to be the thing to do.
Tim Chaplin: My ford ranger 2.3 94' has blown head gasket. my catalytic converter is bad
so im gonna also swap the entire exhaust system. quick question: the air
intake has alot of egr system...the air cleaner has connection to the
exhaust. i want to install a cold air intake and a new exhaust system, do
you think i could do that without the egr connections? im sure your
familiar with the 94' 2.3 and all its egr connections. I am worried about
the installing all that stuff neglecting the egr system and confusing my
computer? perhaps i can bypass the egr electrical system? any suggestions
and help would be greatly apprectiated sir.
Dylan Ewing: Hey Scotty, what if my vehicle doesn't have a radiator cap? Can I do this
test with the coolant reservoir since I don't have a radiator cap?
spaclqd: no doubt your auto smart, but why the 2 second wait after your video cuts
Dylan Johnson: 1997 Mitsubishi eclipse, only starts smoking after about 30 minutes of
driving. Its not constant smoke, only when I accelerate. It goes away after
I get into 2nd or 3rd gear. Any ideas on what it is? Thanks
OlBlueshound: Cool, good little product I reckon, you can also tell if a head gaskets
gone by smelling the coolant with the radiator cap off, it smell like
"exhaust" gases mixed with coolant! Lol, also, if you rev the motor harder
maybe up to just below the red line, under load is best, it usually spits
the coolant out big time to the over flow tank, but won't suck back on cool
down like it should. It's hard to tell the between a blown head gasket, and
a cracked head though!
Charles K. Gearlds: scotty thx for all ur help just recently my son was driving from his
description sounded like alternator or belt broke however I went to
investigate and it started fine no batt light for first few mins idles
perfect but when put in drive it sputter worse than any car I ever saw ??
is this a cam sensor?
Eric Easton: Haha, this guy right here!
Nate LeDuc: I don't think this is 100%. A cracked block would do the same.
john simons: Now the white smoke has changed to grey smoke
sanBastian123: HI Scotty, I had an overheating engine this weekend. The cap on overflow
jug opened. But after pouring coolant and closing jub, a creamy rusty
orange yellow gunk came out on the radiator . No oil but rusty butter.
Is this a bad sign? I never had to top my coolant. The car is old over
228 K miles. Anything to watch over?
carlo vincetti: Yeah but how do you tell which head is blown on a 6 cyl?
Bianca Moreno: Hello scotty i have an 87 chevy 4x4 3/4 ton its spitting blue smoke smoke
out but only when i warm it up in the morning then eventually it goes away
after i drive it....wat can i do to fix it
Jeremy Pulling: scotty you crack me up. very informative videos, keep em comin
Hisham Senhadji: Hey Scotty,
My 2003 GTI 1.8t runs fairly well. But when I start it up in the morning
and drive off after a couple minutes of idle time, a plume of white smoke
stays behind me and definitely has a sweet smell to it. My city MPG is
horrendous at less than 20, but the car still has power. Still could be
Richard Rembao: I got a 97 honda accord and its heats up within 25mins. I got it a new
water pump, new radiator, a thermostat, the fan is stright so it should be
less heating up but still does and everytime I got to put water. it dont
throw it. but ends up missin.help?
orphanedme: Thank you and will you marry me? (kidding) I can't trust the mechanics in
this small town. So thank you!
Joshua Vozda: if your exhaust is kicking out white smoke, does that you have a blown head
Sabrina Butler: By the way it's a 2005 chrysler pacifica. 3.5
Dave L: These days I always check a truck's tailgate to see if Scotty Kilmer is in
Damian Dominik: Hello Scott, I have 2000 jeep grand cherokee 4.0l V6 with 185k on it. I
have problems with starting engine. Engine start after couple spins around
3-5 seconds. What is interesting that if car stays 2- 3 days or more than
start with out any problem . Do you have an idea what can create this
problem?. I was thinking about head gasket or valve gasket . I looks like
my engine is wet all the time.
Additional info :I replaced thermostat gasket to eliminate one leak.
Thank you Damian
terri wheeler: Hi scotty I have a 2005 dodge grand caravan and I was told that I probaby
have a blown head gasket my van keeps overheating and i cant get any heat
do u think that is the problem?
Essence Brown: On the off chance you may read this, Thank you for your videos. I find them
so informative! I came searching for help and ran across your page! I just
got home and when I was getting out of my car I heard that my engine
sounded odd... Twenty minutes later I found myself in a full scale search
of the problem. My car began leaking (More like pouring) out antifreeze!
I'm not kidding, when I pour antifreeze in you can hear it leak onto the
Victoria Clay: i have an 03 Pt Cruiser and i was driving it yesterday and the temperature
gauge was shooting straight up to hot and then it'd slowly go back down to
normal and it kept doing that!
Bruce Wedderburn: Hi scotty. Thanks for the great tips. I need some help with my car. It
smokes mainly after I,ve descended a hill. the smoke is blue. what is
