MTD Genuine Parts: The best thing to do is compare the deck drive system to the parts catalog to see if something is missing. The assistance of a local service center may be needed in this case.

MTD Genuine Parts: Loose belt- most likely the cause as the statement below calls out when the deck is put into grass, the blades stop spinning. This could be caused by a stretched belt, or stretched or missing idler arm spring. Idler arm and spring keep tension on the belt when the deck is ingaged.
If equipped with an electric PTO clutch, it may be a weak battery or charging system not having enough strength to power the coil in the PTO clutch. It could also be the above on this type of system as well.
MTD Genuine Parts: Not knowing what unit this is, electric PTO or manual, it may be one of the following items:
Kris Carr: The blades on my mower seem to be spinning slower. Then when I cut the grass the blades seem to stop spinning and not cut at all. Does this indicate a loose belt or could it be something different?

djtemptation91: @Majoraslayer my drive belt has gone loose (realy loose not stretched) not sure if a spring or something has got lost, do you have a pic of top of deck so I can check?

schrankm: @captaingary100 yes i have, many times on brand new decks. they aren't rusty, dirty or covered with grass if you clean things.
